Water sloshing inside the base pod of my Vibe Shearwater 125
This is a question we get from time to time after a long fishing trip, especially in cold water or after rinsing the kayak.
How does water get inside the base pod?
The base pod on the Shearwater is sealed under normal use but small amounts of water can migrate inside through:
- The drive shaft / pedal-drive opening when the boat is paddled or transported with the drive out.
- The motor mount or accessory cutouts if those were drilled by the owner or a previous owner.
- Microscopic gaps where the pod meets the hull — these can develop over years of UV exposure.
- Rinsing the kayak with a pressure washer (we don't recommend this).
How to prevent recurrence
- Always store the kayak with hatches open and pod out of it's scupper hole in a dry area when not in use.
- Use the supplied scupper plugs when paddling in cold or rough conditions so cockpit water doesn't drain into the through-hull cavities.
- If water continues to appear inside the pod after these steps, contact us with photos so we can determine whether the pod gasket needs replacement.
Should I be worried?
A small amount of water inside the pod (a cup or two over a long season) is normal and doesn't affect the kayak's safety, performance, or warranty. Larger volumes indicate a seal issue we should look at — please reach out.
